Website Revamp Alert!

Screen shot of the new "Home Page" to my website: dianadelosh.com

Tah Dah - I finally re-vamped my website, dianadelosh.com. Now I've done mini revamps and updates but this one's a biggie!

Recently, I had a ZOOM group portfolio review where the Creative Director loved my friend's portfolio. Unfortunately, she didn't love mine. She liked my illustration and my hand lettering but she found my website navigation cumbersome and the thumbnails were way to small and didn't show off my actual art. A big wake- up call that it's time to really re-do my website. PLUS, I could analyze what made my friend, Patricia Keeler's website a hit with her.

Previously my website opened to my ABOUT page. Then you clicked on Illustrations and you saw thumbnails fo ALL my illustrations, then my books etc.

So what's New:

  1. Home/Landing Page with BIG ICONS for each of my 4 Portfolio Sections Picture Book Art, Middle Grade Art, Published Books, Surface Design
  2. BIGGER THUMBNAILS!
  3. Dividing the art into 3 sections allowed for Bigger Thumbnails with less scrolling/clicking. Yup you can still click on each individual piece to see it really big. BUT for the really busy Art Director they don't have to unless they want to.
  4. Moved the ABOUT page to after the portfolio sections.
  5. Added a direct link to my Instagram in my navigation bar. A lot of Art Directors have mentioned how they liked to look at illustrator social media to see other art that may not be in their formal website portfolio.

YAY! My improved website is up, just in time for #KidLitArtPostcard day, tomorrow June 1!

Happy 2015 - Resolutions

It's that time again. Time for list making and reviewing the past year, all in hopes of making the new year a better year. So what have I resolved to do to make 2015 my best year ever or at least a better year? I won't bore you with my whole list but I will share a few that may be relevant to other illustrators, creatives and freelancers.

FINISH Things!
I seem to have ended 2014 with a slew of unfinished projects or things in need of revisions etc. Probably because in between jobs I worked on personal projects but had to put them aside until...  Now I have a lot of loose ends that need tying up and they're bugging me. So - I will continue to create furiously BUT I will do my best to finish them, beginning with those pesky projects that are haunting me.

Build up my Illustration Portfolio
There's always room for improvement. More Black & White art: line and grayscale art. People. I love drawing animals but I need more people in my portfolio.  Continue having fun with hand lettering. Lastly, experiment with a new illustration technique or two. Have fun. Keep it fresh. If you don't enjoy your art you can't expect someone else to.

4 Postcard Mailings
I've been resolving to do 3 - 4 Postcard mailings for years but last year was the first in long time that I actually did 3 mailings. One of the things I "got" in 2014 because I finally figured it out. Step 1 - Update my Master List as I go. Step 2 - Create lots of new art -so I have something to pick from when it's time to create a new promo postcard. Must create to have something to promote.

Document my creative process
In 2014 I sketched/created oodles more than in previous years but half the time I never posted/tweeted etc. about it. Unfortunately in the digital age it seems as if things only exist if you have posted tweeted or shared it digitally in some fashion. I am resolving to blog/share with purpose to get the "right" eyes on my art.

Wishing all a Happy, Creative, Productive and Prosperous New Year!

Now on HAI!

I've been eyeing this illustrator's portfolio site hireanillustrator.com for about a year and I've finally made the leap. What I like about HAI is that it focuses on illustrators only. Not illustrators, designers, writers and etc.  However it is a general illustration site versus a childrens illustrations only site. Which I'm hoping will be a plus, showcasing my work to new uncharted markets.  I've also heard from illustrator friends that HAI is very proactive in promoting and that they've gotten inquiries and work through this site. Sounds great but I know from experience that just because it worked for them doesn't mean it will work for me. There are many X factors - such as timing and luck as well as tastes, trends and the economy. Not to mention the energy level of the illustrator in generating buzz. One small con is that it's a UK* based site -but with the ability to send art as files etc. location does not seem to matter. Yup I've signed on and am keeping my fingers crossed. So without further ado - Here's the link to my HAI portfolio:  hireanillustrator.com/i/diana-delosh.
*childrensillustrators.com/DianaTDelosh is also a UK based site - how I know location does not matter.

IF: TIME

Time Expired Portfolio
© Diana Ting Delosh

Unfortunately for the ill-fated illustrator on her way to see the NYC Art Director, her portfolio's freshness time was about to expire. TICK... TICK... TICK... BOOM!
My response to this weeks Illustration Fridays prompt: TIME - 1 of my nightmares.

Fri Illustrator's Intensive: Part II - NYC Art Directors

Tips & Commentary from the 2009 SCBWI Winter Conference NYC Art Director's Panel. The Panel consisted of 3 AD's representing 2 trade pubs and 1 mass market pub. They reviewed previously selected samples from 10 anonymous illustrators. Fresh, New, Exciting, Dated, Cliche, art labeled according to the perspectives of the AD. If the retro look is a current and an exciting new trend what made something else dated?

What they want from our illustrations:
- Strong Characters
- Impact: Does it grab you and draw you in?
- Narration: do they tell a story?
- Dependability
- Creatitivity
- Craft
- Concept: Is there an original ideal? Does it make you want to see more?
- Something accessible yet fresh.

How to get noticed:
- Send Postcards. Make illustration image big. Contact info type to a minimum and smaller. Do 3 or 4 mailings a year.
- Get published in other related markets (kid's magazines, greeting cards, etc).
- Websites and blogs. Websites are great because they can share the url with colleagues when discussing a project. Blogs give insight to the person behind the art.

Misc Tips
- Illustrator source books have gone the way of the dodo.
- If there is a product in your illustration make up your own product logo vs doing a known company logo to avoid possible lawsuits and other complication. Ex: the 3 bears are making porridge don't draw your favorite brand. Design your own!

2009 SCBWI Portfolio Room: No feed back... you only know if someone liked your work if they took a sample and than of course you would only know whom, IF they contacted you. Unsatisfying - but the equivalent of doing a multi-pub house drop off.
